How Does Microdermabrasion Procedure Work?

Microdermabrasion procedure helps to stimulate the creation of both collagen and skin cells through the combination of tiny exfoliating crystals and vacuuming action of the machine.

microdermabrasion procedure

The microdermabrasion procedure itself uses a small hand held device, known as the microdermabrasion machine. The purpose of this device is to blast fine particles of sand-like crystals, usually aluminum oxide crystals onto your skin with rapid and short strokes. This gentle abrasion technique helps in exfoliating your skin, thereby lifting dead skin debris, leaving the skin baby soft with a pink glow. However, in some situations, the dermatologist might used magnesium oxide or sodium bicarbonate crystals. Normally, the procedure uses closed-loop negative pressure systems that blasts very fine microdermabrasion crystals into the skin using negative vacuum pressure.

The abrasion technique is also done in a way to prevent heat up of the skin. Hence, once the dead and damaged outer layer of the skin had been eliminated, the aluminum oxide crystals will further polish your skin. The next part of the microdermabrasion procedure is to vacuum up these particles. With the mild suction from the microdermabrasion system, not only does it remove the dead skin debris but it also stimulates blood flow resulting in the production of more collagen.

The microdermabrasion treatment generally takes about 30-60 minutes per session. Multiple treatments are suggested and they are spaced out about every two to three weeks. Usually the dermatologist will recommend between six and twelve treatments. It is also possible that you might be required for additional maintenance treatments later on.

Generally, the skin type and skin depth are the key factor in determining the results of microdermabrasion. Besides, the speed of the hand held strokes and the rate of the flow of crystals are also the affecting factors.

Those that have rosacea, eczema or sensitive skin would likely not have favorable results after the treatment. As for those who have oily skin and enlarged pores, they will see visible improvement as acne will be reduced and pores will shrink. In fact, the best results are seen with those that have dry skin. The results will most likely to show after the initial treatment. However, such treatment is also not meant for scars that are too deep within your skin. Those that are found on your skin's outer layer are the only ones that can be improved.

Do's and don’ts before and after the treatment:

  • Don't use products that contain aspirin or salicylic acid before your cosmetic skin abrasion.

  • Don’t smoke for a week beforehand.

  • Don’t sunbathe, visit tanning beds and wax.

  • Don't use any chemical peels or collagen injections for two weeks before micro dermabrasion.

  • Do apply topical alpha hydroxy preparations or vitamin A products to achieve the best results.

  • Do rinse your face with warm water to open up your pores.

  • Do purchase any required aftercare products before the procedure or immediately after.
